An improved method for image denoising based on fractional-order integration

Li Xu, Guo Huang, Qing-li Chen, Hong-yin Qin, Tao Men, Yi-fei Pu,huangguoxuli@163.com

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2020, Volume 21, Issue 10,   Pages 1413-1534 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1900727

Abstract: Given that the existing methods damage the texture details of an image, a new method based on fractional integration is proposed. First, the formula is deduced by generalizing the , and then the approximate value of the operator is estimated by a numerical method. Finally, a mask operator of any order is constructed in eight pixel directions of the image. Simulation results show that the proposed method can protect the edge texture information of the image while removing the noise. Moreover, this method can obtain higher image feature values and better image vision after denoising than the existing denoising methods, because a mechanism is adopted during the iterative processing.

Phenanthrene sorption to environmental black carbon in sediments from the Song-Liao watershed (China)

Jinghuan ZHANG, Mengchang HE, Chunye LIN, Ke SUN, Bin MEN, John L. ZHOU,

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 434-442 doi: 10.1007/s11783-009-0150-0

Abstract: Black carbon (BC) in ten contaminated sediments from the Song-Liao watershed, NE China, was isolated upon treatments using a combustion method at 375°C, and the isolates’ sorption isotherms for phenanthrene (Phen) were determined. All sorption isotherms were nonlinear and fitted well by the Freundlich model. A negative relation was found between Freundlich sorption nonlinearity parameter ( values) and BC/total organic carbon (TOC) content of the original sediments (=0.687, <0.01), indicating the dominance of BC in Phen sorption nonlinearity. The BC isolates from this industrialized region had values of 0.342 to 0.505 and log values of 6.02 to 6.42(μg·kg·OC)/(μg·L) for Phen. At a given , the BC had higher value than the original sediments, revealing a higher sorption capacity for BC. BC was responsible for 50.0% to 87.3% of the total sorption at =0.05 , clearly indicating the dominance of BC particles in overall sorption of Phen by sediments.

NICE’s Indirect Coal-to-Liquid Process for Producing Clean Transportation Fuels Using Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Basha,Li Weng,Zhuo-wu Men,Wayne Xu,Badie I. Morsi

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2016, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 362-376 doi: 10.15302/J-FEM-2016049

Abstract: China is currently the world’s top coal consumer and the largest oil importer to sustain its rising economy and meet the mounting demand for transportation fuels. However, the increasing emissions due to the huge fossil fuels consumption, coupled with oil market instability, could derail China’s economic growth and jeopardize its national energy security. To face such a hurdle, China has been aggressively supporting low-carbon businesses opportunuties over the past decade, has recently announced several plans to cap coal utilization, and is currently the biggest investor in clean energy technologies. Coal-to-Liquid (CTL) is one of the most promising clean coal technologies, offering an ideal solution that can meet China’s energy demands and environmental expectations. It is widely known that the Shenhua Group has pioneered and is currently leading the commercialization of the Direct Coal Liquefaction (DCL) process in China. This paper highlights a part of the joint research effort undertaken by the National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy (NICE) and University of Pittsburgh in order to develop and commercialize the Indirect Coal Liquefaction (ICL) process. In this mission, NICE has built and operated an ICL plant including a large-scale (5.8-m ID and 30-m height) Slurry-Bubble-Column Reactor (SBCR) for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis using iron catalyst. The research, conducted at the University of Pittsburgh over the past few years, allowed building a user-friendly Simulator, based on a comprehensive SBCR model integrated with Aspen Plus and is validated using data from the NICE actual ICL plant. In this paper, the Simulator predictions of the performance of the NICE SBCR, operating with iron and cobalt catalysts under four different tail gas recycle strategies: (1) direct recycle; (2) using a Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) unit; (3) using a reformer; and (4) using a Chemical looping Combustion (CLC) process, are presented. It should be mentioned also that our joint research effort has laid the foundation for the design of a commercial-scale SBCR for producing one-million tons per annum of environmentally friendly and ultraclean (no sulfur, no nitrogen and virtually no aromatics) transportation fuels, which could greatly contribute to ensuring China’s national energy security while curbing its lingering emission problems.

is essential for the integrity of stereociliary rootlet in cochlear hair cells in mice

Frontiers of Medicine 2019, Volume 13, Issue 6,   Pages 690-704 doi: 10.1007/s11684-018-0638-8

Abstract: encodes the taperin protein, which is concentrated in the tapered region of hair cell stereocilia in the inner ear. In humans, mutations cause autosomal recessive nonsyndromic deafness (DFNB79) by an unknown mechanism. To determine the role of in hearing, we generated -null mice by clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat/Cas9 genome-editing technology from a CBA/CaJ background. We observed significant hearing loss and progressive degeneration of stereocilia in the outer hair cells of -null mice starting from postnatal day 30. Transmission electron microscopy images of stereociliary bundles in the mutant mice showed some stereociliary rootlets with curved shafts. The central cores of the stereociliary rootlets possessed hollow structures with surrounding loose peripheral dense rings. Radixin, a protein expressed at stereocilia tapering, was abnormally dispersed along the stereocilia shafts in null mice. The expression levels of radixin and -actin significantly decreased. We propose that is critical to the retention of the integrity of the stereociliary rootlet. Loss of in -null mice caused the disruption of the stereociliary rootlet, which resulted in damage to stereociliary bundles and hearing impairments. The generated -null mice are ideal models of human hereditary deafness DFNB79.
